The question is about something specific, not the whole thing
Your answers point at a particular problem rather than a general verdict. There is a thing that has not been said, or a line that has not been drawn, and the relationship is being judged in the absence of that attempt.
This is the most workable version of the question and also the easiest one to skip, because making the specific request is more exposing than staying vaguely unhappy. If they say no you will know something, and knowing is the part you have been avoiding.
